Falling through the Cracks — Virginia Tech and the Restructuring of College Mental Health Services

Shuchman, Miriam·2007·New England Journal of Medicine

Abstract

Interview with Mark Reed on mental illness among college students and mental health care on campus. (07:16)Download Since April 16, when Virginia Tech student Seung-Hui Cho gunned down 27 fellow students and 5 faculty members and injured 24 other people before taking his own life, some disturbing facts about his mental health history have emerged. At various points during Cho's college career, Virginia Tech police officers, professors, and students recognized that he was mentally troubled, but although state psychiatric evaluators once briefly committed him to a psychiatric hospital, it is unclear whether anyone from the school monitored him after his release. These discoveries have left investigators wondering whether the killings could have been prevented — and college . . .

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
