Time tells the tale: tracing the interplay between self-regulated learning and deep approaches to learning with GenAI through individual differences

Xia, Qi·2026·Interactive Learning Environments

Abstract

The integration of Generative AI (GenAI) is reshaping pedagogical practices and learning paradigms, including self-regulated learning (SRL) and deep approaches to learning (DAL). Although SRL and DAL are linked to improved outcomes, their interaction within AI-supported contexts is underexplored, as is the evolving nature of SRL, its impact on DAL over time, as well as the role of individual differences. To address these gaps, this longitudinal study examined temporal relationships among SRL phases (forethought, performance, self-reflection) and DAL, alongside the moderating effects of Big Five personality traits and gender. Using cross-lagged panel modeling and latent profile analysis, results revealed that (a) SRL operates as a dynamic, recursive process, with early performance and reflection predicting later forethought; (b) all SRL phases consistently enhanced DAL, which also showed temporal stability; and (c) personality traits, especially extraversion and neuroticism, significantly influenced SRL development during forethought, while gender showed no significant effect. These findings suggest that university students actively engage in self-regulation as a dynamic, evolving process that fosters DAL with GenAI over time. Educators should place greater emphasis on individual differences to offer tailored, continuous support that strengthens students’ SRL in AI-rich environments.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
