A Modification of the Newtonian Dynamics - Implications for Galaxy Systems

Milgrom, M.·1983·The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

I consider the implications of a modification of the Newtonian dynamics to galaxy systems. Masses and mass-to-light ratios are re-derived, on the basis of existing data, for binary galaxies, small groups, clusters of galaxies, and the Virgo Supercluster. For each type of galaxy system, the average M/L values come out to be a few solar units. These results eliminate the need to assume large amounts of hidden mass in galaxy systems, if the modified dynamics applies.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • TeVeS was introduced by Bekenstein as a relativistic generalization of MOND.

“A Tensor–Vector–Scalar theory known as TeVeS in the literature was introduced by Bekenstein in Bekenstein (2004) as a relativistic generalization of Modified-Newtonian-Dynamics (MOND) theory (Milgrom 1983a, b).”

  • MOND and TeVeS aim at addressing observations such as flat rotation curves of galaxies without dark matter.

“MOND and TeVeS both aim at addressing some observations such as the flat rotation curves of galaxies without the need for Dark Matter.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
