Crystal fields and dopant-ligand separations in cubic centres of rare-earth ions in fluorites
Open accessAbstract
Phenomenological crystal-field parameters were calculated from spectroscopic data for Eu 3+ , Dy 3+ and Er 3+ in cubic sites in a number of fluorite-structure hosts. These values, and similar data from other calculations, were used to obtain, with the help of a semiempirical modelling procedure, the dopant-ligand distances in the corresponding centres. It is confirmed that significant local lattice collapse does take place in these centres. The final dopant-ligand distances calculated in this investigation compare favourably with relevant information collected by other methods.

At least one example, the cubic centre in the Eu3+:PbF2 system [21], clearly illustrates the limitations of the suitably modified electrostatic effective charge model.
“with at least one example (the cubic centre in the Eu3+: PbF, system [21]) clearly illustrating the limitations of such a model.”

The results of this study, as well as analogous work on the tetragonal [15,19] and cubic [21] centres in RE3+: fluorite systems, give clear support to the view that a suitably modified electrostatic effective charge model may still be of some use in analysing rare-earth crystal field spectra.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
