Principles of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in One and Two Dimensions

Open access

Abstract

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is one of the most powerful and versatile techniques now available for the study of molecular structure and reaction mechanisms. Written by recognised experts in the field, this classic account of modern NMR spectroscopy was heralded on its first publication in 1987 as "the lasting text of its age" Nature. Now available in paperback, it provides a thoroughly comprehensive review of modern NMR techniques and the underlying principles. It describes the study of solutions and solids using one- and two-dimensional spectroscpy, providing both a solid theoretical foundation and a description of practical procedures. The material is presented in an intuitive manner within a rigorous mathematical framework, and is extensively illustrated throughout. This important work was written at the ETH in Zurich, one of the world's leading institutions in advanced NMR methods, which has played a key role in the development of Fourier spectroscopy, two-dimensional spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform NMR imaging. Available in paperback for the first time, the book provides the definitive account of the field, and is without question "a must.....for every self-respecting NMR spectroscopist" Journal of Magnetic Resonance.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • In the literal approach, the symbol '⊗' retains its normal operational meaning, namely the tensor product.

“there are those expositions (which we may call the 'literal approach') in which the symbol ' ⊗ ' retains its normal operational meaning - namely, the tensor product.”

  • Multidimensional spectroscopic techniques probe the electronic structure and nuclear dynamics of molecules through their response to sequences of short pulses with variable, carefully timed delays.

“Multidimensional spectroscopic techniques, first developed in nuclear magnetic resonance [36], and gradually extended to higher frequency (infrared, and optical) regimes [37,38], probe the electronic structure and nuclear dynamics of molecules through their response to sequences of short pulses with variable, carefully timed delays.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
