Abstract

The THz Kerr effect measures the birefringence induced in an otherwise isotropic material by a strong THz pulse driving the Raman-active excitations of the systems. Here we provide experimental evidence of a sizable Kerr response in insulating ${\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$ due to infrared-active lattice vibrations. Such a signal, named the ionic Kerr effect, is associated with the simultaneous excitation of multiple phonons. Thanks to a theoretical modeling of the time, polarization, and temperature dependence of the birefrengence, we can disentangle the ionic Kerr effect from the off-resonant electronic excitations, providing an alternative tunable mechanism to modulate the refractive index on ultrashort timescales via infrared active phonons.

  • The theory predicts an effect proportional to the product of the Ex and Ey components of the incident terahertz field.

“We anticipate here that the theory predicts an effect proportional to the product of the Ex and Ey components of the incident terahertz field, as we show in Fig. 2b and in the Methods.”
  • An additional IKE contribution, associated with the nonlinear excitation of the infrared-active soft phonon mode, is present.

“Besides the EKE, it has been shown that an additional contribution, IKE, associated with the nonlinear excitation of the infrared-active soft phonon mode, is present23.”
  • In ref. 23 it was shown that the EKE response is given by an equation involving Ex and Ey pump components, the angle θ, and the two independent tensor components of the χ(3) tensor in cubic STO from ref. 58.

“In ref. 23 it was shown that the EKE response is given bywhere Ex and Ey are the components of the pump pulse along generic x and y orthogonal directions, ϑ is the angle that x and y form with respect to the main crystallographic axes (i and j) and , as are the only two independent tensor components of the χ(3) tensor in cubic STO from ref. 58.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
