Flexible MEMS Neural Interface for Long-Term Minimally Invasive Deep-Brain Recording Within CSF Environments

Liang, Jizhi, Li, Xiaoyu, Wang, Xiner, Tao, Tiger H., Zhou, Zhitao·2026·2026 IEEE 39th International Conference on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS)

Abstract

This paper presents a flexible deep-brain neural interface fabricated using MEMS technology, consisting of a deformable microelectrode array mechanically coupled to a shape-memory silk fibroin scaffold. The device is delivered to the lateral ventricle via standard neurosurgical catheters and, upon exposure to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), self-unfolds to conformally appose periventricular surfaces and support stable, high-fidelity electrophysiological recordings. In a chronic Parkinson disease (PD) sheep model, implantation targeting the head of the caudate nucleus enabled minimally invasive intraventricular recordings over a four-week period in freely moving animals. Longitudinal analysis of pathological oscillatory activity, particularly in the beta band, demonstrates that chronic intraventricular electrophysiology provides a viable route for tracking dynamic neural biomarkers during Parkinsonian disease progression.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
