The effect of desferrioxamine on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Yersinia enterocolitica and Streptococcus faecalis in human serum: Uptake of desferrioxamine-bound iron
Open accessAbstract
Growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Yersinia enterocolitica in human serum was enhanced by addition of excess iron or of the iron-chelating drug desferrioxamine, but neither had any effect on the growth of Streptococcus faecalis. Desferrioxamine could remove iron slowly from transferrin under physiological conditions, and desferrioxamine-bound iron was taken up by S. aureus and Y. enterocolitica but not by Strep. faecalis. The results suggest that patients with iron overload undergoing chelation therapy with desferrioxamine may have an increased risk of bacterial infection.

S. aureus can use the hydroxymate-type siderophore desferrioxamine as an iron source.
“Brock and Ng demonstrated that S. aureus is capable of utilizing the hydroxymate-type siderophore desferrioxamine as an iron source [61].”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
