Abstract

Tightly tracking charge migration: Electron transfer dynamics underlie many chemical and biochemical reactions. Erk et al. examined the charge migration between individual carbon and iodine atoms during dissociation of iodomethane (ICH 3 ) molecules (see the Perspective by Pratt). After initiating scission of the C-I bond with a relatively low-energy laser pulse, they introduced a higher-energy x-ray pulse to instigate ionization and charge migration. Delaying the arrival time of the x-ray pulse effectively varied the separation distance being probed as the fragments steadily drifted apart. The experimental approach should also prove useful for future studies of charge transfer dynamics in different molecular or solid-state systems. Science , this issue p. 288 ; see also p. 267

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
