Abstract

We believe that L. Fontana, L. Partridge, and V. D. Longo should have included a\ndiscussion of sirtuins in their Review “Extending healthy life span—From yeast to humans”\n(16 April, p. 321). We also believe that some of the references used are misleading.\nThe authors state that the purpose of their Review is to “consider the role of nutrient-sensing\nsignaling pathways in mediating the beneficial effects of dietary restriction.” Yet there was\nno mention of the sirtuins, a family of critically important nutrient-sensing proteins that\npromote health span from yeast to mammals, as shown by more than 1000 peer-reviewed\npublications from labs around the world. The authors state that “[i]t is unlikely that a single,\nlinear pathway mediates the effects of dietary restriction in any organism,” and we agree.\nIndeed, the aging field now recognizes that healthy life span is under the influence of several\nnutrient-sensing pathways, and there is at least as much evidence for the involvement of\nsirtuins in the dietary restriction response as for any of the pathways discussed in the Review.

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Ageing delaying interventions such as CR, exercise or nutraceuticals as resveratrol induce mitochondrial biogenesis in humans and other organisms.

“ageing delaying interventions such as CR, exercise or nutraceuticals as resveratrol also induce mitochondrial biogenesis in humans and other organisms (Baur et al., 2010; Feige et al., 2008; Rodriguez-Bies et al., 2015).”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
