Structure of the DASH/Dam1 complex shows its role at the yeast kinetochore-microtubule interface

Abstract

Staying attached through division: When a cell prepares to divide, it copies its DNA into pairs of each chromosome, called chromatids. Microtubules attach to the chromosome pairs through protein complexes called kinetochores. During cell division, microtubule depolymerization pulls the chromatids apart. Jenni and Harrison describe the structure of an essential component of the yeast kinetochore, the DASH/Dam1c complex, that forms a ring around a microtubule. The structure shows how the DASH/Dam1c ring interacts with the microtubule and kinetochore components so that the kinetochore can track to the end of the microtubule through cycles of growth and shrinkage. • The predicted structure of a potential inter-decamer interaction between Spc19 and Dad1 involves a flexible loop of Spc19 and the N-terminal region of Dad1, which could be important for ring formation in vivo.

“We went beyond previous structural data by predicting the structure of a potential inter-decamer interaction between Spc19 and Dad1 involving a flexible loop of Spc19 and the N-terminal region of Dad1, which could be important for ring formation in vivo (66).”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
