Abstract

Increased ferric iron in allografts triggers a switch in the growth of the mold Aspergillus fumigatus from a colonizing to an invasive phenotype.

  • Iron availability and fungal iron uptake determine the virulence of many fungal pathogens.

“A. fumigatus grows substantially better in the presence of NTBI in the plasma or in an iron-rich microenvironment in the lung, supporting the concept that iron availability and fungal iron uptake determines the virulence of many fungal pathogens (Haas, 2012;Hsu et al., 2018;Petzer et al., 2019).”

The Discussion (page unavailable) reports that increased iron uptake was associated with increased virulence in A. fumigatus, and the Results link tissue iron to invasion in a mouse airway-transplant model. The paper also mentions an association between excess iron and virulence in Rhizopus oryzae, but it does not establish that iron availability and fungal iron uptake determine virulence across many fungal pathogens. The Results section on tissue iron and the Discussion report that iron-rich airway grafts promoted A. fumigatus invasion in mice. But the paper does not establish better growth in plasma containing NTBI; its culture experiments used iron dextran or hemoglobin, and the Results state that iron supplementation did not alter wild-type growth rate. The lung finding is therefore supported as increased invasion in a transplant model, not as a general increase in growth. (LLM, conf=0.89)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
