A controlled trial of methyl phenidate (ritalin) in the treatment of depressive states
Open accessAbstract
o ( Phenyl cx piperidyl acetic acid methyl ester hydrochloride (methyl phenidate, "ritalin ") has recently been introduced as a central nervous system stimulant. Animal experiments have shown that it increases psychomotor activity and has a pressor effect. Its effectiveness in counteracting the effects of hypnotics in man, experimentally and in cases of poisoning, has been reported, as has its usefulness in treating reserpine-induced depression. It has also been used in other depressive states where its action was considered to be beneficial in reducing the disorder of mood and in increasing confidence and speed of activity (Meier, Gross, and Tripod, 1954;

Psychostimulants have been investigated for use as augmentation agents in MDD since the 1950s.
“Psychostimulants have been investigated for use as augmentation agents in MDD since the 1950s (Robin and Wiseberg, 1958).”
From Lisdexamfetamine dimesylate augmentation for adults with major depressive disorder and inadequate response to antidepressant monotherapy: Results from 2 phase 3, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies (2016) · cites this paper as Robin and Wiseberg, 1958
The introduction describes a 1958 trial of the stimulant methylphenidate in patients with depressive states, supporting the historical point. The introduction and Selection of Cases section describe methylphenidate versus placebo alongside general outpatient management, but do not establish its use as an augmentation agent for MDD specifically. About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
