Prolonged faecal excretion of poliovirus in a nurse with common variable hypogammaglobulinaemia
Open accessAbstract
Summary: A nurse with common variable hypogammaglobulinaemia was found to excrete a non-vaccine strain type II poliovirus for almost a year following a bout of gastroenteritis. Attempts were made to halt intestinal carriage of the virus in view of the possible risk of spread to immunocompromised patients and the risk of paralytic poliomyelitis to the patient himself. Three doses of killed Salk vaccine failed to stimulate salivary anti-polio antibodies. Excretion of the virus ceased spontaneously just before oral immunoglobulin containing high titres of antibodies to polio virus was used to halt virus excretion.

In suspected high-risk areas lacking effective AFP surveillance, supplementary surveillance activities, such as sampling community contacts of AFP cases, stool surveys of healthy children, or environmental sampling, have been implemented to increase sensitivity for detecting wild polioviruses.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
