The Economics of Internal Migration: Advances and Policy Questions

Jia, Ning, Molloy, Raven, Smith, Christopher, Wozniak, Abigail·2023·Journal of Economic Literature

Abstract

We review developments in research on within-country migration, focusing on internal migration in the United States. We begin by describing approaches to modeling individuals’ migration decisions and equilibrium outcomes across local areas. Next, we summarize evidence regarding the impact of migration on individuals’ outcomes, implications of migration for local labor market adjustment, and interactions between migration and housing markets. Finally, we discuss evidence on the efficacy of policies aimed at encouraging migration and conclude by highlighting important unanswered questions that are critical for informing migration-related policy. • Most interstate and long-distance moves are work related.

“Given that most interstate and long-distance moves are work related ( Jia et al. (2023)), the finding of large and significant effects on out-of-state moving reinforces the conclusion that mortgage rate lock-in impacts labor reallocation.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
