The attention-based neural network defense trains a separate neural network on simulated model updates under various backdoor attacks to learn the potential vulnerability of the global model against different backdoor attacks.
“The central server simulates the WFL tasks under various types of backdoor attacks. Then, the simulated model updates are collected to train a separate neural network model, which learns the potential vulnerability of the global model against different backdoor attacks.”

The attention-based defense requires all possible backdoor attack patterns to be trained in the server before implementation, and the aggregator requires access to single local updates, risking participant privacy.
“The major problem of this defense method is that to distinguish the malicious updates, all possible backdoor attack patterns must be trained in the server before implementation. During the detection, the aggregator requires access to single local updates. Thus, the privacy of the participant is at risk of leaking.”

In the attention-based defense, an alignment score closer to +1 indicates a more likely benign update, while a score close to -1 indicates a likely adversary update.
“If the alignment score 𝑠 𝑖 is closer to + 1 , 𝑝 𝑖 is more likely to be a benign update. On the other hand, if 𝑠 𝑖 is close to -1 , 𝑝 𝑖 is likely to be an adversary update.”

The attention-based method shows better defense performance than traditional median-based aggregation and residual-based re-weighting aggregation.
“This method shows better defense performance than traditional median-based aggregation and residual-based re-weighting aggregation.”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
