An organizational memory approach: To information management

Anand, Vikas, Manz, Charles C., Glick, William H.·1998·The Academy of Management Review

Abstract

We extend and adapt a model of group memory to organizations. Using this extended model, they identify information management challenges of the next century and suggest that organizations can address these challenges by locating a large portion of their information-processing activities outside their formal boundaries, by adopting novel socialization tactics, and by focusing on the management of soft knowledge forms (e.g., tacit knowledge, judgment, and intuitive abilities). Whereas current theories increasingly equate information management with the management of information technology, we argue that information technology needs to be complemented by organization-level processes related to organizational memory.

  • The transactional memory model integrates information retained in memory of a group into two components: information stored by members in their individual memories and directories held by members that identify existence, location, and recovery media of information held by other individuals.

“The transactional memory model was developed by Wegner, Giuliano, and Hertel (1985), Wegner (1987), Wegner, Erber, and Raymond (1991), Barnier and Sutton (2008).Integrated the information retained in memory of a group into two components, the information stored by the members of the group in their individual memories and the directories held by members of the group that identified the existence,”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
