Evaluation of Mine Land Ecological Resilience: Application of the Vague Sets Model Under the Nature-Based Solutions Framework
Open accessAbstract
To achieve a scientific evaluation of land ecological resilience in mining areas and promote the green transformation and sustainable development of the mining industry, this study is based on the core concept of Nature-based Solutions (NbS), coupling the “Driving force–Pressure–State–Impact–Response” (DPSIR) framework, and constructs an evaluation system for mine land ecological resilience (MLER) focusing on sustainability. This system covers multiple aspects, including natural ecology, socio-economics, and policy management, comprising 21 secondary indicators that comprehensively respond to NbS’ fundamental principles of “nature-guided, multi-party collaboration, and long-term adaptation.” In terms of evaluation methodology, this study proposes a combined weighting model that integrates AHP-CRITIC game theory with Vague sets. First, subjective expert experience and objective data variance are balanced through combined weighting. Based on game theory, the optimal combination coefficients were determined (α1 = 0.624, α2 = 0.376) to reconcile subjective and objective preferences. Subsequently, the three-dimensional interval structure of Vague sets is utilized to effectively accommodate fuzzy information and data gaps. By characterizing the restoration process through interval membership, the model enhances the representational capacity of the evaluation results regarding complex ecological information. Empirical research conducted in the mining areas of Gan Xian, Xing Guo, Yu Du, and Xun Wu in Jiangxi Province effectively identified differences in resilience levels: the resilience of the Xing Guo mining area was classified as I, Gan Xian and Yu Du as II, and Xun Wu as IV. These results are fundamentally consistent with the AHP-Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation method, verifying the robustness and reliability of the model. The NbS-guided evaluation system and model constructed in this study provide scientific tools for identifying differences in the sustainability of MLER and key constraints, promoting the transformation of restoration models from “engineering-driven” to “nature-driven, long-term adaptation” in the context of NbS in China.

TL;DR
This study builds a mine land ecological resilience (MLER) evaluation system by coupling Nature-based Solutions (NbS) with the DPSIR framework and applying AHP-CRITIC game-theoretic combined weighting plus Vague sets. In four Jiangxi mining areas, it classifies Xing Guo as level I, Gan Xian and Yu Du as level II, and Xun Wu as level IV, with results broadly consistent with AHP-fuzzy comprehensive evaluation.
Key findings
- The combined weighting coefficients from game theory were α1 = 0.624 and α2 = 0.376; combined weights ranged from 0.033 to 0.057 with an extreme difference of only 0.024, avoiding the over-prominence of indicators such as D4 (0.068) and I3 (0.061) under multiplicative synthesis and the excessive weakening of R4 (0.024) and D2 (0.036).
- MLER levels differed across sites: Xing Guo was classified as I with interval membership [0.3327, 0.4285]; Gan Xian as II with [0.3177, 0.3922]; Yu Du as II with [0.2772, 0.4010]; and Xun Wu as IV with [0.3451, 0.4199].
- For Gan Xian, the Vague sets model gave a final level of II, with I interval [0.2759, 0.3504] and II interval [0.3177, 0.3922] overlapping from 0.3177 to 0.3504; the AHP-fuzzy comprehensive method also gave II, with membership values I = 0.307, II = 0.348, III = 0.245, IV = 0.067, V = 0.033.
- Dimension weights differed by method: AHP subjective weights for D, P, S, I, R were 0.178, 0.199, 0.236, 0.183, 0.204; CRITIC objective weights were 0.198, 0.193, 0.233, 0.130, 0.246; combined weights were 0.186, 0.197, 0.235, 0.163, 0.220.
Methods
- The study constructs an MLER evaluation indicator system under the NbS concept and DPSIR framework, comprising 21 secondary indicators across five dimensions: driving forces, pressures, state, impacts, and responses.
- Data include meteorological bulletins, regional meteorological station monitoring, statistical yearbooks for population density and GDP, and Delphi-based expert scoring for qualitative indicators such as soil health and vegetation community structure.
- The model uses AHP for subjective weights, CRITIC for objective weights, game theory for combined weighting, and Vague sets to calculate interval membership degrees across evaluation levels; empirical application covers Gan Xian, Xing Guo, Yu Du, and Xun Wu in Jiangxi Province, with comparison against least squares, multiplicative synthesis, and AHP-fuzzy comprehensive evaluation.
Limitations
- The paper states that the model is built on static data and struggles to accurately depict long-term dynamic processes such as soil fertility accumulation and vegetation succession; future work could introduce time-series Vague sets or couple the model with machine learning.
- The paper states that validation samples are concentrated in non-ferrous metal mining areas in humid Southern China, so universality for coal mines in northern arid regions and salt lake mines on high-altitude plateaus requires further improvement.
- Evident from the text: qualitative indicators rely on expert Delphi scoring, and the case validation is limited to four mining areas, so broader cross-regional and cross-mineral robustness remains untested beyond the stated sample.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-26.
Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-26.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
