Individual Mobility

Ellemers, Naomi, Van Laar, Colette·2010·The SAGE Handbook of Prejudice, Stereotyping and Discrimination

Abstract

Theory and research on prejudice has often characterized individual mobility as an effective and attractive strategy for members of devalued social groups to combat stereotyping and discrimination. It has been assumed that individuals who have sufficient merit and invest enough effort should be able to prove their personal value and hence move up in the status structure, despite the prejudice and discrimination directed towards their group. This chapter focuses on the limits of the effectiveness of individual mobility as a strategy to address negative group-based expectations about the self. We argue that due to the mechanisms addressed here individual mobility beliefs and the behaviours thus elicited tend to reinforce rather than challenge group-based inequality.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
