Childhood Diversity and Commonality: Some Methodological Insights

Open access
Pia Christensen, Allison James·2008·Research With Children

Abstract

An age/developmental based approach is, for example, often incorporated in the methodological design as if it were a ‘natural’ feature of childhood research. Mauthner (1997) for instance argues that the ‘age’ of a child necessarily determines the kinds of research techniques which can be used. Others more unquestioningly take ‘age’ for granted and design their methods to accord with the supposed developmental or cognitive abilities of their study population of children. Thus, as James, Jenks and Prout have questioned: How often do researchers choose an age group simply because they feel that the children will be ‘old enough’ to engage effectively with the researcher’s project, rather than because at that particular age in that particular society children are sharing a particular social, rather than simply, developmental experience?

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
