Abstract

The era of intelligent agents is upon us, driven by revolutionary advancements in large language models. Large Language Model (LLM) agents, with goal-driven behaviors and dynamic adaptation capabilities, potentially represent a critical pathway toward artificial general intelligence. This survey systematically deconstructs LLM agent systems through a methodology-centered taxonomy, linking architectural foundations, collaboration mechanisms, and evolutionary pathways. We unify fragmented research threads by revealing fundamental connections between agent design principles and their emergent behaviors in complex environments. Our work provides a unified architectural perspective, examining how agents are constructed, how they collaborate, and how they evolve over time, while also addressing evaluation methodologies, tool applications, practical challenges, and diverse application domains. By surveying the latest developments in this rapidly evolving field, we offer researchers a structured taxonomy for understanding LLM agents and identify promising directions for future research. • Multi-domain agents engage with tools and/or APIs, manage complex workflows such as coding, healthcare, finance, and crime analysis, and provide memory-based learning that allows them to continue a task by absorbing adaptive information from external cues.

“Multi-domain agents engage with tools and/or APIs, manage workflows that will inevitably be very complex, such as coding, healthcare, finance, crime analysis, etc., and provide memory-based learning that allows them to continue a task by absorbing adaptive information from external cues [31,67,75-77,136,139].”

From The Rise of Agentic AI: A Review of Definitions, Frameworks, Architectures, Applications, Evaluation Metrics, and Challenges (2025) · cites this paper as [75]

Section 2.3.1 (p. 7) describes self-feedback and self-rewarding approaches that help LLM agents refine their outputs and improve performance. Section 2.3.3 (p. 8) also describes iterative improvement from external feedback. Neither passage identifies BrainBody-LLM or RASC or establishes that those particular systems use these mechanisms. • Adaptability encompasses ongoing interpersonal learning and agile feedback and tuned goals and measures via conceptual multi-agent models, formal policy operationalizations such as Petri Nets, and applied second burst benchmark measures that simulate unpredictable, complex, and dynamic environments.

“Adaptability: It encompasses ongoing interpersonal learning and agile feedback and tuned goals and measures via conceptual multi-agent models, formal policy operationalizations such as Petri Nets [154], and applied second burst benchmark measures that simulate unpredictable, complex, and dynamic environments [75].”

From The Rise of Agentic AI: A Review of Definitions, Frameworks, Architectures, Applications, Evaluation Metrics, and Challenges (2025) · cites this paper as [75]

Section 3.1.1 (p. 8) describes benchmarks that test agents in interactive environments and assess their ability to handle a complex, dynamic visual world; Section 3.1.2 (p. 9) also describes simulation-based benchmarks in dynamic environments. These passages support the benchmark portion of the claim, but do not identify “second burst” measures or say the environments are unpredictable. The earlier conceptual-model and Petri Net clauses are attached to a different citation. (LLM, conf=0.82)

  • In mature agent systems, reliability increasingly depends on external memory stores, tool registries, protocol definitions, sandboxes, sub-agent orchestration, compression pipelines, evaluators, test harnesses, and approval loops.

“In mature agent systems, reliability increasingly depends on external memory stores, tool registries, protocol definitions, sandboxes, sub-agent orchestration, compression pipelines, evaluators, test harnesses, and approval loops [Wang et al., 2024a, Li, 2025, Luo et al., 2025, Xi et al., 2023].”

From Externalization in LLM Agents: A Unified Review of Memory, Skills, Protocols and Harness Engineering (2026) · cites this paper as Luo et al., 2025

The survey discusses long-term memory stores and context compression (Section 2.1.2, p. 4), system-level evaluation (Section 3.1.3, p. 9), coordination protocols (Section 6.1, p. 18), and human verification loops for reliability (Section 6.3, p. 18). It does not establish that reliability in mature agent systems depends on the entire listed stack: in particular, its sandbox example is a benchmark environment, not a reliability requirement, and it does not identify tool registries or test harnesses as such requirements. About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
