Abstract

Aim: A thorough study of the complicated or pathological grief phenomenon and a recapitulation of those detection and assessment indicators enabling a speedy identification in the clinical practice. Method: A compilation of the most significant indicators was carried out after a large research on the scientific literature appeared latterly and the results derived from our professional experience. Results: A presentation of the major diagnosis criteria and tools used at present, which allow professionals of the field of health to a more precise valuation of possible complications happening during the grief process. Conclusions: We rely on important indicators and grief assessment tools since the recognition of such clinical diagnosis is gaining in importance, thus becoming a matter of significance within the scientific community. Consequently, a development in the investigation of the complicated grief aimed at optimizing the possibilities of the emotional support should be considered a must.

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Due to constant losses, such as not being able to say goodbye or being limited in rituals, this can lead to complicated grief, characterized by intense emotional discomfort, which can generate disability in daily functioning.

“In addition to this, due to the constant losses that people face, such as not being able to say goodbye to their loved ones or being limited to performing traditional social and cultural rituals (Goveas and Shear, 2020; Morris et al., 2020), this can lead to a complicated grief, characterized by intense emotional discomfort, which in turn could generate a disability in people's daily functioning,”

From A Self-Applied Multi-Component Psychological Online Intervention Based on UX, for the Prevention of Complicated Grief Disorder in the Mexican Population During the COVID-19 Outbreak: Protocol of a Randomized Clinical Trial (2021) · cites this paper as Barreto et al., 2012

In “Del duelo normativo al duelo complicado” (page unavailable), the paper says complicated grief can substantially interfere with general functioning. Its Prigerson criteria describe intense or distressing separation-related symptoms, and “Planteamiento del problema” says being able to say goodbye is important. The copy does not establish that repeated losses or restrictions on mourning rituals cause complicated grief. (LLM, conf=0.84)

  • Complicated grief is characterized by intense emotional distress lasting longer than socially expected, causing disability in daily functioning, endangering health and well-being, and can last for years or become indefinitely chronic.

“Complicated grief is characterized by intense emotional distress that can last longer than socially expected and that causes a disability in the person's daily functioning, endangers their health and well-being, and can last for years and even become indefinitely chronic (Barreto et al., 2012).”
  • The Complicated Grief Inventory (IDC) has satisfactory psychometric properties.

“The evaluation of their psychometric properties was satisfactory (30) .”
  • Secondary suffering, involving anticipation of the future and ruminations of the past, enhances the original pain.

“2) secondary suffering, which is everything that has to do with anticipation of the future and the ruminations of the past, which enhances the original pain.”

From Mindfulness y duelo: programa MADED, mindfulness para la aceptación del dolor, las emociones y el duelo (2020) · cites this paper as [30]

The section “La experiencia del duelo” discusses suffering in grief and thoughts associated with anticipating or experiencing the loss of a loved one, but it does not describe secondary suffering caused by anticipating the future or ruminating on the past. Searches for those terms and for an increase in the original pain found no passage making that point; page numbers were unavailable in our copy. (LLM, conf=0.72)

Experimental — accuracy not yet measured
  • Primary pain, due to resistance to pain (non-acceptance), is equal to suffering.

“1) primary pain, which is due to resistance to pain (non-acceptance), is equal to suffering;”

From Mindfulness y duelo: programa MADED, mindfulness para la aceptación del dolor, las emociones y el duelo (2020) · cites this paper as [30]

The section “La experiencia del duelo” describes grief as painful and discusses suffering during bereavement. The “-Prigerson” section lists difficulty accepting a death as a symptom of separation distress. Neither passage defines primary pain or says that resistance to pain produces suffering; searches for those terms found no such account. (LLM, conf=0.73)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
