Abstract

Collagen peptides, which are found at high concentrations in the human body, are present in animal bones and the skin of marine organisms, namely, fish scales. Collagen is the most abundant structural protein of various connective tissues in animals. Furthermore, it is widely used in biomedical material, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, and leather industries. Peptides extracted from scales of various fish protect against ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced skin damage and photo-aging. However, the protective effects of collagen peptides derived from the scales of Branchiostegus japonicus against UVB exposure are unclear. This study investigated the effects of peptides larger than 1 kDa (high-molecular weight peptides [HMP]) and smaller than 1 kDa (low-molecular weight peptides [LMP]), derived from extracts of B. japonicus scales, against UVB-induced skin damage and photo-aging. These peptides scavenged 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals in a dose-dependent manner. In UVB-exposed HaCaT human keratinocytes, LMP inhibited 8-isoprostane generation, a marker of cellular lipid peroxidation. The peptides also suppressed the UVB-induced increase in tyrosinase activity and melanin content in B16F10 mouse melanoma cells. In addition, the LMP and HMP treatment suppressed UVB-induced elastase and matrix metalloproteinase-1 activities in the HaCaT cells. These results indicate that peptides derived from B. japonicus scales have antioxidant, antiphoto-aging, and skin-whitening effects.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Oh et al.'s study lacks a control group or comparison with existing treatments.

“Additionally, the study lacks a control group or comparison with existing treatments, which would provide a better understanding of the efficacy of the peptides.”

From Cosmeceuticals in photoaging: A review. (2024) · cites this paper as [49]

The Results compare peptide-treated cells with untreated and UVB-only control groups and report a positive-control group treated with NAC. The methods also describe groups treated with NAC and arbutin alongside the peptides. Thus, the study did include controls and comparator treatments, contrary to the claim. (LLM, conf=0.91)

Checked by a reasoning model — may be wrong.

Experimental — accuracy not yet measured
  • Oh et al.'s study on peptides from Branchiostegus japonicus has limited evidence because sample size and experimental design are not clearly described.

“However, the level of evidence provided in this study is limited. The sample size and experimental design are not clearly described, making it difficult to assess the validity and generalizability of the findings.”

From Cosmeceuticals in photoaging: A review. (2024) · cites this paper as [49]

The paper’s experimental and statistical procedures (section labeled 고 찰; page unavailable in our copy) describe cell seeding, peptide and UVB treatments, controls, assays, and at least three repetitions of each experiment. This contradicts the claim that its sample size and experimental design are not clearly described. The broader judgment about validity and generalizability is the citing authors’ assessment, not a limitation the source states. (LLM, conf=0.88)

Checked by a reasoning model — may be wrong.

Experimental — accuracy not yet measured
  • Oh et al.'s results show promising effects of peptides in reducing oxidative damage and photoaging.

“While the results of the study show promising effects of the peptides in reducing oxidative damage and photoaging, further research with a larger sample size, randomized controlled trials, and longer follow‐up periods are needed to confirm these findings.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
