Predicting termination and continuation status in psychotherapy using the transtheoretical model
Open accessAbstract
Measures from the transtheoretical model of change were compared to traditional client characteristic variables as predictors of termination and continuation status of clients entering psychotherapy. Client characteristics were not significant predictors but the transtheoretical variables of stages, processes of change, and decisional balance for therapy were excellent predictors. A discriminative function using the transtheoretical variables correctly classified 92% of the clients into two groups: (a) premature terminators and (b) appropriate terminators and therapy continuers. Discussion focused on the importance of matching therapy to client's stage of change in order to reduce the average rate of 40% of clients terminating therapy prematurely.

Existing self-report motivation measures reliably predict dropout from CBT for anxiety but do not reliably predict treatment outcome.
“Existing measures reliably predict treatment dropout (e.g., Brogan, Prochaska, & Prochaska, 1999; Dozois, Westra, Collins, Fung, & Garry, 2004; Keijsers, Kampman, & Hoogduin, 2001) but not treatment outcome.”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
