Abstract

This review stands in the larger framework of functional materials by focussing on heterostructures of rare-earth nickelates, described by the chemical formula R NiO 3 where R is a trivalent rare-earth R = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, …, Lu. Nickelates are characterized by a rich phase diagram of structural and physical properties and serve as a benchmark for the physics of phase transitions in correlated oxides where electron–lattice coupling plays a key role. Much of the recent interest in nickelates concerns heterostructures, that is single layers of thin film, multilayers or superlattices, with the general objective of modulating their physical properties through strain control, confinement or interface effects. We will discuss the extensive studies on nickelate heterostructures as well as outline different approaches to tuning and controlling their physical properties and, finally, review application concepts for future devices.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • The electrical properties of LNO are sensitive to mechanical stress, grain boundaries, and pores.

“The electrical properties of LNO are sensitive to mechanical stress, grain boundaries, and pores [1,22].”

From Control of Columnar Grain Microstructure in CSD LaNiO3 Films (2023) · cites this paper as [1]

The indexed record’s Abstract (no page given) says that strain control can modulate the physical properties of rare-earth nickelate heterostructures, which provides some support for sensitivity to mechanical stress. The available passages do not address grain boundaries or pores, or specifically link either to LNO’s electrical properties. (LLM, conf=0.78)

Experimental — accuracy not yet measured
  • The increase in annealing time from 5 to 10 min slightly decreases resistivity, and this can be caused by improving film crystalline performance.

“However, the increase in annealing time from 5 to 10 min slightly decreases the resistivity value, and this can be caused by improving of the film crystalline performance [1,22].”

From Control of Columnar Grain Microstructure in CSD LaNiO3 Films (2023) · cites this paper as [1]

The indexed entry for Catalano et al. (2018; no page given) describes a review of rare-earth nickelate thin films and ways to tune their properties. The available passages do not address a change in annealing time from 5 to 10 minutes, a resulting resistivity decrease, or improved crystallinity. Searches for those terms found no passage that verifies the claim. (LLM, conf=0.72)

Experimental — accuracy not yet measured

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
