How orbital angular momentum affects beam shifts in optical reflection

Abstract

It is well known that reflection of a Gaussian light beam (${\mathrm{TEM}}_{00}$) by a planar dielectric interface leads to four beam shifts when compared to the geometrical-optics prediction. These are the spatial Goos-H\"anchen (GH) shift, the angular GH shift, the spatial Imbert-Fedorov (IF) shift, and the angular IF shift. We report here, theoretically and experimentally, that endowing the beam with orbital angular momentum leads to coupling of these four shifts; this is described by a $4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4$ mixing matrix.

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • This helicity-dependent switching of the central intensity was observed in experiments and employed for spin-controlled transmission of light via chiral nanoapertures and AM-induced circular dichroism in non-chiral structures.

“This helicity-dependent switching of the central intensity was observed in experiments 20,25 and employed for spin-controlled transmission of light via chiral nanoapertures 104 and AM-induced circular dichroism in non-chiral structures 105 .”

The Experimental Set-Up (p. 3) describes switching the incident beam’s polarization to measure shifts in its reflected position, and the Experimental Results (p. 4) report orbital-angular-momentum-dependent beam shifts. Neither passage reports helicity-dependent switching of central intensity. The transmission and circular-dichroism applications are attached to different citations in the citing sentence, so they are not judged here. (LLM, conf=0.76)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
