Abstract

We report the synthesis, crystal structure, and physical properties of two new high-entropy silicides (HESs), namely ${({\mathrm{Nb}}_{0.1}{\mathrm{Mo}}_{0.3}{\mathrm{W}}_{0.3}{\mathrm{Re}}_{0.2}{\mathrm{Ru}}_{0.1})}_{5}{\mathrm{Si}}_{3}$ and ${({\mathrm{Nb}}_{0.2}{\mathrm{Mo}}_{0.3}{\mathrm{W}}_{0.3}{\mathrm{Re}}_{0.1}{\mathrm{Ru}}_{0.1})}_{5}{\mathrm{Si}}_{3}$. Structural analysis indicates that both HESs consist of a (nearly) single tetragonal ${\mathrm{W}}_{5}{\mathrm{Si}}_{3}$-type phase (space group $I4/mcm$) with a disordered cation distribution. Electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements show that ${({\mathrm{Nb}}_{0.1}{\mathrm{Mo}}_{0.3}{\mathrm{W}}_{0.3}{\mathrm{Re}}_{0.2}{\mathrm{Ru}}_{0.1})}_{5}{\mathrm{Si}}_{3}$ and ${({\mathrm{Nb}}_{0.2}{\mathrm{Mo}}_{0.3}{\mathrm{W}}_{0.3}{\mathrm{Re}}_{0.1}{\mathrm{Ru}}_{0.1})}_{5}{\mathrm{Si}}_{3}$ are weakly coupled bulk superconductors, which represent the first superconducting high-entropy nonoxide ceramics. In particular, these HESs have higher ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ values (3.2--3.3 K) compared with those of the binary counterparts and their ${B}_{\mathrm{c}2}(0)/{T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ ratios are the largest among superconductors of the same structural type.

  • The upper critical fields appear to increase with increasing entropy in some high-entropy systems.

The Results and Discussion (page unavailable) report that the high-entropy silicides have higher upper-critical-field-to-transition-temperature ratios than comparable W₅Si₃-type superconductors, and note similar enhancement in some high-entropy alloys. The paper does not establish that the upper critical fields themselves increase as entropy increases; it compares ratios across materials and speculates that increased disorder explains the enhancement. About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
