Mulsemedia vs. Multimedia: State of the art and future trends

Sulema, Yevgeniya·2016·2016 International Conference on Systems, Signals and Image Processing (IWSSIP)

Abstract

Multimedia has become an ordinary component of modern software and hardware. Sound, graphics, and animation are present at almost every application of both desktop and mobile platforms. However, human senses cover more than two media. Thus, the transition from Multimedia to Mulsemedia (MULtiple SEnsorial MEDIA) is quite natural. Mulsemedia enriches traditional multimedia content with new media objects, such as olfactory, haptic, and thermoceptic ones. Mulsemedia gives new opportunities for immersive technologies and opens new horizons for communication, education, advertising, and medicine. However, new media demand new technological solutions implemented as both hardware and software. The paper gives an overview on existing standards, hardware, and software that can support transition from Multimedia to Mulsemedia as well as on future trends that can have positive impact on the development of mulsemedia-based technologies.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
