Spatially Ordered Dynamics of the Bacterial Carbon Fixation Machinery

Savage, David F., Afonso, Bruno, Chen, Anna H., Silver, Pamela A.·2010·Science

Abstract

Carboxysomes in a Row: The carboxysome is an organelle-like proteinaceous microcompartment that sequesters the enzymes of carbon fixation from the rest of the cytoplasm in cyanobacteria. Cyanobacterial carbon fixation is a major component of the global carbon cycle. Savage et al. (p. 1258 ) now show that carboxysomes are linearly arranged within the cytoplasm in a process that involves the bacterial cytoskeleton. This arrangement is important in carboxysome partitioning during cell division. When carboxysome partitioning is disrupted by interfering with the bacterial cytoskeleton, carbon fixation is impaired.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Two cytoskeletal proteins, par A and merB, are involved in the organization of the specific carboxysomal pattern.

“It seems that two cytoskeletal proteins, par A (involved in chromosome and plasmid segregation) and merB (involved in cell morphology), are involved in the organization of this specific carboxysomal pattern (Savage et al. 2010).”
  • In cyanobacteria, carboxysomes possess a specific organization through the cell, not found in other prokaryotes, and this distribution is closely linked to CO2 fixation efficiency.

“A recent study has shown that in cyanobacteria, carboxysomes possess a specific organization through the cell, not found in other prokaryotes, and this distribution is closely linked to the CO2 fixation efficiency.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
