Innate lymphoid cells: A new paradigm in immunology

Open access
Eberl, Gérard, Colonna, Marco, Di Santo, James P., McKenzie, Andrew N. J.·2015·Science

Abstract

Cells acting at the intersection of immunity: For years, scientists divided the immune system into two arms: innate and adaptive. The cell types involved in the two arms differ in specificity and in how quickly they respond to infections. More recently, immunologists discovered a family of immune cells termed “innate lymphoid cells,” which straddle these two arms. Eberl et al. review current understanding of innate lymphoid cells. Like innate immune cells, they respond to infection quickly and do not express antigen receptors; however, they secrete a similar suite of inflammatory mediators as T lymphocytes. Better understanding of the processes regulating these cells may allow for their therapeutic manipulation. Science , this issue 10.1126/science.aaa6566

  • Recent studies have shown that AHR influences the maintenance of certain resident immune cells, such as innate lymphoid cells in the gut, while also aiding in the orchestration of immune responses such as cytokine production.

“Recent studies have expanded upon these early characterizations to show that AHR influences the maintenance of certain resident immune cells, such as innate lymphoid cells in the gut, while also aiding in the orchestration of immune responses such as cytokine production (Cella & Colonna, 2015; Eberl et al., 2015; M. Kim & Kim, 2016; Zhou, 2016).”

The section “How diet and the microbiota influence ILC development and activity” states that food-derived Ahr ligands are required to maintain ILC3s after birth, supporting the gut-ILC maintenance claim. “ILCs translate signal cytokines into effector cytokines” describes cytokine production by ILCs, but does not say that AHR aids or regulates that production. About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
