Cancer expert doubts claims about prostate cancer trial

Cole, A.·2008·BMJ

Abstract

A leading clinical oncologist has raised questions about claims that a new drug could treat as many as 80% of men diagnosed as having the most aggressive and previously drug resistant form of prostate cancer. The results of the phase I clinical trial by the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden Hospital, showed significant tumour shrinkage and big falls in prostate specific antigen (PSA) concentrations in most of the 21 men with advanced prostate cancer who received the drug abiraterone acetate ( Journal of Clinical Oncology 2008 Jul 21; doi: 10.1200/JCO.2007.15.9749). But Nick James, professor of clinical oncology at Birmingham University, said that it was far …

This paper’s full text isn’t openly available, so its claims and self-check weren’t run. The registry and citation checks still apply.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Implementation strategies are inherently complex social interventions, as they address multifaceted and complicated processes within interpersonal, organizational, and community contexts.

“Implementation strategies are inherently complex social interventions, as they address multifaceted and complicated processes within interpersonal, organizational, and community contexts [12,56-58].”
  • Important frameworks for intervention design and evaluation stress that theory should inform design and that interventions should be specified by component techniques.

“Key frameworks for designing and evaluating behaviour change interventions (Collins et al., 2011;Craig et al., 2008) emphasise the importance of using theory to inform intervention design as well as specifying interventions in terms of component BCTs.”
  • Behaviour change interventions are typically complex and consist of multiple interacting components.

“Behaviour change interventions are usually complex, comprising many interacting components (Craig et al., 2008).”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
