Originally published11 Nov 2019https://doi.org/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.119.042287Circulation. 2019;140:1684–1686Epicardial and pericardial adipose tissues (EAT and PAT) are cardiac fat depots and independent risk factors of cardiovascular disease. Exercise training reduces EAT and PAT1 through lipolysis, which is partially induced by acute discharge of adrenaline2 and interleukin-6 (IL-6).3 IL-6 has been shown to stimulate myocardial hypertrophy in vitro and in vivo,4 but it is not known whether IL-6 regulates exercise-induced adaptations in cardiac fat and left myocardial mass (LVM) in humans. Thus, the present study aimed to test whether aerobic exercise training reduces cardiac fat through an IL-6 receptor–dependent mechanism and moreover to investigate the role of IL-6 signaling in training-induced adaptations of the myocardium. This study presents the preplanned secondary analysis of a larger single-center, double-blind, randomized exercise intervention study. The methods for this study have been described previously.1,5 In short, the final study population comprised 52 abdominally obese but otherwise healthy participants randomly assigned to moderate/high-intensity aerobic exercise (3 sessions of 45 minutes per week reaching 70%–85% of Vo2max) or no exercise with or without monthly infusions of the IL-6 receptor antagonist tocilizumab (RoActemra, Roche Pharma AG) in the clinical standard dose of 8 mg/kg or saline (placebo; Figure, A).Download figureDownload P

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Exercise training leads to a decrease in visceral and cardiac fat mass and hence a decrease in circulating inflammatory molecules via a mechanism that involves exercise-induced increase in IL-6.

“Exercise training will lead to a decrease in visceral and cardiac fat mass (136, 138, 221) and hence a decrease in circulating inflammatory molecules via a mechanism that involves exercise-induced increase in IL-6 (136), as described above.”

From Muscle–Organ Crosstalk: The Emerging Roles of Myokines (2020) · cites this paper as [138]

  • IL6 receptor signalling plays an important role in the reduction of cardiac-especially epicardial-fat depots and increases in LV mass with aerobic training.

“In addition, there is evidence for an important role of IL6 receptor signalling on the reduction of cardiac-especially epicardial-fat depots and increases in LV mass with aerobic training.182”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
