Therapeutic and cosmetic applications of mangiferin: A patent review

Telang, Manasi, Dhulap, Sivakami, Mandhare, Anita, Hirwani, Rajkumar·2013·Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Patents

Abstract

Introduction Mangiferin, a natural C-glucoside xanthone [2-C-β-D-glucopyranosyl-1, 3, 6, 7-tetrahydroxyxanthone], is abundantly present in young leaves and stem bark of the mango tree. The xanthonoid structure of mangiferin with C-glycosyl linkage and polyhydroxy components contributes to its free radical-scavenging ability, leading to a potent antioxidant effect as well as multiple biological activities. Areas covered An extensive search was carried out to collect patent information on mangiferin and its derivatives using various patent databases spanning all priority years to date. The patents claiming therapeutic and cosmetic applications of mangiferin and its derivatives were analyzed in detail. The technology areas covered in this article include metabolic disorders, cosmeceuticals, multiple uses of the same compound, miscellaneous uses, infectious diseases, inflammation, cancer and autoimmune disorders, and neurological disorders. Expert opinion Mangiferin has the potential to modulate multiple molecular targets including nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein expression. Mangiferin exhibits antioxidant, antidiabetic, antihyperuricemic, antiviral, anticancer and antiinflammatory activities. The molecular structure of mangiferin fulfils the four Lipinski's requisites reported to favor high bioavailability by oral administration. There is no evidence of adverse side effects of mangiferin so far. Mangiferin could thus be a promising c…

  • Multiple signaling pathways, including nuclear NF-κB signaling and COX-2 protein expression, are involved in the antitumor effects of mangiferin.

“However, a collective patent review on mangiferin unveiled that multiple signaling pathways, including nuclear NF-κB signaling and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein expression are involved in the antitumor effects of mangiferin (56).”
  • Mangiferin is a candidate molecule in the development of novel antitumor drugs.

“This patent review concluded that mangiferin is a candidate molecule in the development of novel antitumor drugs.”
  • Mangiferin inhibits expression of RelA and RelB, activates IκB and suppresses phosphorylation of NF-κB kinase, thereby inhibiting transcriptional activity of NF-κB and inducing apoptosis in tumor cells.

“It was demonstrated that mangiferin inhibits the expression of RelA and RelB, activates inhibitor of NF-κB (IκB) and suppresses the phosphorylation of NF-κB kinase, thereby inhibiting the transcriptional activity of NF-κB and inducing apoptosis tumor cells (54)(55)(56).”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
