Baby Universes, Holography, and the Swampland
Open accessAbstract
On the basis of a number of Swampland conditions, we argue that the Hilbert space of baby universe states must be one-dimensional in a consistent theory of quantum gravity. This scenario may be interpreted as a type of "Gauss's law for entropy" in quantum gravity, and provides a clean synthesis of the tension between Euclidean wormholes and a standard interpretation of the holographic dictionary, with no need for an ensemble. Our perspective relies crucially on the recently-proposed potential for quantum-mechanical gauge redundancies between states of the universe with different topologies. By an application of the state-operator correspondence, this proposal rules out the possibility of nontrivial, strictly well-defined bulk operators supported in a compact region. We further comment on the possible exceptions in $d\leq 3$ for this hypothesis, and the role of an ensemble for holographic theories in low dimensions, such as JT gravity in $d = 2$ and possible cousins in $d=3$. We argue that these examples are incomplete physical theories that should be viewed as branes in a higher dimensional theory of quantum gravity, for which an ensemble plays no role.

TL;DR
The paper argues that in a consistent unitary theory of quantum gravity in d > 3, the baby universe Hilbert space must be one-dimensional, dim H_BU = 1. This “Baby Universe Hypothesis” is presented as a Swampland condition that resolves Euclidean wormhole/ensemble tensions with holography and implies no global symmetries and no strictly well-defined compact bulk operators.
Key findings
- Proposes the Baby Universe Hypothesis: for unitary quantum gravity in d > 3, dim H_BU = 1, so the only gauge-invariant baby universe state is the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction.
- Argues α-parameters act as free coupling constants and global (-1)-form symmetries; in d > 3 they violate the no-free-parameters condition and triviality of cobordism, placing theories with α-parameters in the swampland.
- Shows the hypothesis implies the absence of global symmetries in d > 3, and via state-operator correspondence rules out nontrivial, strictly well-defined bulk operators supported in a compact region.
- Argues the standard AdS/CFT dictionary and boundary locality imply H_BU = H_QG(∅) is the unit for the tensor product, giving dim H_BU = 1 and factorization without an ensemble; d = 2 JT gravity and possible d = 3 exceptions are treated as incomplete theories or branes in higher-dimensional quantum gravity.
Methods
- Theoretical/conceptual analysis: reviews Coleman’s α-parameters and Marolf-Maxfield gauge redundancy in the baby universe Hilbert space, then uses Swampland conditions—no free parameters, no global symmetries, triviality of cobordism—to argue for the hypothesis.
- Uses AdS/CFT factorization, axioms of local quantum field theory, and a state-operator correspondence; discusses JT gravity, matrix models, and topological strings as low-dimensional examples.
- No empirical data or sample; the work is a formal argument in quantum gravity and holography.
Limitations
- The authors state they cannot prove the Baby Universe Hypothesis because no complete theory of quantum gravity in d > 3 is available; they present it as their belief that it holds in higher-dimensional complete theories.
- The authors acknowledge possible exceptions in d ≤ 3, especially d = 2 JT gravity and potentially d = 3, but argue these are incomplete physical theories that should be viewed as branes/worldvolume theories in a higher-dimensional quantum gravity.
- Evident from the text: the argument relies on conjectural Swampland conditions and formal consistency rather than empirical tests or data.

“This ensemble average may be interpreted as the result of an old, well known source of free parameters in quantum gravity [3], namely the so-called α-parameters of Coleman [4], studied further in [5, 6] (for a review and other connections to the Swampland Program, see [7]).”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-11-07.
Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-11-07.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
