USE OF DINITROPHENOL IN OBESITY AND RELATED CONDITIONS: A PROGRESS REPORT

TAINTER, M. L., STOCKTON, A. B., CUTTING, W. C.·1933·Journal of the American Medical Association

Abstract

We1have recently suggested that alpha-dinitrophenol (1-2-4) might have therapeutic value in conditions in which an increased metabolic rate would be beneficial. Study of its pharmacologic properties shows that it has the power to increase metabolism to very high levels without causing important damage to vital organs and functions. Serious harm is apparently only caused by the drug in large doses which produce too great metabolic stimulation, with resulting fever. In low, or therapeutic, doses, the metabolism may be increased 50 per cent or more over considerable periods of time without unpleasant symptoms or toxicity. Such an action is useful in treating obesity, since the increased metabolism results in loss of weight, just as it does with thyroid medication. This paper is in the nature of a progress report on results obtained to date of treating 113 consecutive cases of obesity observed in clinic and private practice. No attempt

  • 2,4-dinitrophenol has potential therapeutic benefits in obesity and metabolic diseases.

“One of the first molecules to be described as having potential therapeutic benefits in obesity and metabolic diseases is the mitochondrial uncoupler 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP)263.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
