The insecticide fipronil and its metabolite fipronil sulphone inhibit the rat α1β2γ2L GABAAreceptor
Open accessAbstract
Human exposure to fipronil leads to symptoms (headache, nausea and seizures) typically associated with the antagonism of GABA A receptors in the brain. In this study, we have examined the modulation of the common brain GABA A receptor subtype by fipronil and its major metabolite, fipronil sulphone. Whole-cell and single-channel recordings were made from HEK 293 cells transiently expressing rat alpha1beta2gamma2L GABA A receptors.

“Human exposure to fipronil leads to symptoms (headache, nausea and seizures) typically associated with the antagonism of GABA A receptors in the brain.”
- Also stated in: § Introduction · plain
“This results in symptoms and complications typically associated with the blockade of the GABA A receptor function, for example, headache, nausea and seizures (Mohamed et al., 2004).”

The Discussion’s “Clinical features of acute human toxicity” section reports nausea and seizures in patients with fipronil poisoning, while “Mechanism of toxicity” says fipronil inhibits GABA-gated chloride channels and binds to GABA_A receptors. The paper does not report headache among the human symptoms, so that part of the attributed symptom list is unsupported. (LLM, conf=0.87)

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-11.
Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-11.
Cited sources are checked by gpt-6-sol.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
