Candida albicans reprioritizes metal handling during fluconazole stress
Open accessAbstract
Fluconazole stress pushes C. albicans outside of metal homeostasis, requiring adaptation. Fungal adaptation to drug stress requires remodeling of metal homeostasis networks, creating vulnerabilities to environmental fluctuations in Cu availability.

Increased intracellular iron in fluconazole-treated C. albicans cells was not retained in labile pools and instead was incorporated into structures not observable by electron paramagnetic resonance.
“A previous study showed that the increased intracellular iron in fluconazole-treated C. albicans cells was not retained in labile pools and instead was incorporated into structures not observable by electron paramagnetic resonance (30).”
From Candida albicans enhances iron uptake to maintain fluconazole resistance (2025) · cites this paper as [30]
The Results section (‘Fluconazole depletes EPR-detectable Fe’) reports that fluconazole increased total iron while reducing the EPR-detectable iron signal. It says this *suggests* the additional iron is not held in labile pools but incorporated into EPR-invisible structures; the citing sentence presents that interpretation as established fact. (LLM, conf=0.86)
Experimental — accuracy not yet measuredElevated iron levels are redistributed for the production of very specific iron-related proteins.
“In line with the previous findings (30), this suggests that elevated iron levels are redistributed for the production of very specific iron-related proteins.”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
