Abstract

Significance: Hospitalized patients are susceptible to serious infections that are rarely encountered by healthy people. Two of the most problematic causes are Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans , a bacterium and fungus, respectively. Both are members of our normal microbial communities, but cause significant mortality in immunocompromised individuals. The formation of biofilms—microbial communities that grow on biotic or artificial surfaces—is a common feature of these infections and presents a formidable barrier to their treatment. We show here that E. faecalis produces a small protein that is a potent inhibitor of the ability of C. albicans to form biofilms and reduces fungal virulence in several models, raising the possibility that it might be developed as an antifungal agent.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • The active form of EntV is 68 amino acids, does not exhibit antifungal activity per se, and inhibits C. albicans biofilm formation both in vitro and in vivo.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
