The effects of family interventions on relatives’ burden: a meta-analysis

PIM, CUIJPERS·1999·Journal of Mental Health

Abstract

A meta-analysis is conducted to test the hypothesis that family interventions have a positive effect on the burden of relatives of psychiatric patients. An analysis of the 16 studies that were found, indicate that family interventions can have considerable effects on relatives' burden, psychological distress, the relationship between patient and relative and family functioning. Large effects are found in a subset of six studies. Interventions with more than 12 sessions have larger effects than shorter interventions. Several other success predictors can be hypothesised to be related to outcome.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Family psychoeducation interventions of more than 12 sessions had larger effect sizes on family outcomes.

“Larger effect sizes were found for interventions of more than 12 sessions.”
  • In a meta-analysis of 16 studies, family psychoeducation had considerable positive effects on relatives' burden, psychological distress, the relative-patient relationship, and family functioning.

“In the only meta-analysis of 16 studies of family outcomes, FPE had considerable positive effects on relatives' burden and psychological distress, the relationship between relatives and the person with schizophrenia, and family functioning (Cuijpers 1999).”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
