Exploring the Fluctuations of Foreign Language Enjoyment in Conversation: An Idiodynamic Perspective

Elahi Shirvan, Majid, Talebzadeh, Nahid·2018·Journal of Intercultural Communication Research

Abstract

The main focus of this study was to discern the effect of different topics on the dynamics of one of the main variables of positive psychology, foreign language enjoyment (FLE). To do this, we used an idiodynamic method to explore the rapid moment-to-moment changes of FLE. Seven female university students engaged in a conversation involving both simple and difficult topics, and self-rated their moments of experiencing enjoyment during the conversation process. The results indicate that the dynamicity of enjoyment emerges not only within individuals, but also across individuals intra-personally under the influence of conversational topics. Furthermore, the idiodynamic method provided us with the opportunity to examine the underlying factors of the dynamic fluctuations of FLE and gain a deeper insight into FLE as a dynamic system.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
