Measuring Social Integration and Social Networks

Brissette, Ian, Cohen, Sheldon, Seeman, Teresa E.·2000·Social Support Measurement and Intervention

Abstract

This chapter illustrates the various ways in which social integration hasbeen measured and provide guidelines for choosing an appropriate measure. It discusses the theoretical underpinnings of the social integration conceptand reviews the various measurement techniques that have been used, including an overview of both individual and community-level social integrationmeasures. It suggests that measurement techniques should be chosen in the contextof hypotheses about how the social environment might influence health andwith consideration of the characteristics of the population under study. It also presents an overview of formal social network theory.

  • Three major components of social relationships are consistently evaluated: integration in social networks, received social support, and perceived social support.

“Despite striking differences, three major components of social relationships are consistently evaluated [5]: (a) the degree of integration in social networks [9], (b) the social interactions that are intended to be supportive (i.e., received social support), and (c) the beliefs and perceptions of support availability held by the individual (i.e., perceived social support).”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
