The Incomplete Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle in the Blue-green Alga Anabaena Variabilis
Abstract
Summary: The presence of an incomplete tricarboxylic acid cycle in Anabaena varia-bilis and Anacystis nidulam is described. These blue-green algae lack both α-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase and succinyl-CoA synthetase. Succinyl-CoA was formed in extracts of A. variabilis by 3-ketoacyl CoA-transferase using acetoacetyl-CoA as CoA donor. The activities of the other tricarboxylic cycle enzymes were measured in extracts prepared from autotrophic organisms and from those grown in the presence of acetate. No alterations in activity indicative of enzyme repression or de-repression were observed. These results are discussed in relation to possible reasons for autotrophic behaviour.

Cyanobacteria possess an incomplete TCA cycle in which 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase and succinyl-CoA synthetase are missing.
“As stated above, cyanobacteria possess an incomplete TCA cycle where two key enzymes are missing, the 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase (ogdh, EC 1.2.4.2), involved in the transformation of 2-OG into succinyl-CoA, and the succinyl-CoA synthetase (sucL, EC 6.2.1.4, 6.2.1.5), for the formation of succinate (Pearce et al. 1969; Stanier and Cohenbazire 1977).”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
