Aerosense: A Self-Sustainable and Long-Range Bluetooth Wireless Sensor Node for Aerodynamic and Aeroacoustic Monitoring on Wind Turbines
Open accessAbstract
This article presents a low-power, self-sustainable, and modular wireless sensor node for aerod- ynamic and acoustic measurements on wind turbines and other industrial structures. It includes 40 high-accuracy barometers, ten microphones, and five differential pressure sensors and implements a lossy and a lossless on-board data compression algorithm to decrease the transmission energy cost. The wireless transmitter is based on Bluetooth Low Energy 5.1 (BLE) tuned for long range and high throu- ghput while maintaining adequate per-bit energy efficiency (80 nJ). Moreover, we field-assessed the node capability to collect precise and accurate aerodynamic data. Outdoor experimental tests revealed that the system can acquire and sustain a data rate of 850 kb\$\ \text{s}$over 438 m. The power consumption while collecting and streaming all the measured data is 120 mW, enabling self-sustainability and long-term in situ monitoring with a 111 cm 2 photovoltaic panel.

TL;DR
Aerosense is a self-sustainable, modular BLE 5.1 wireless sensor node for aerodynamic and aeroacoustic monitoring on wind turbine blades, using arrays of MEMS barometers, microphones, differential pressure sensors, and an IMU. It demonstrates long-range high-throughput data streaming, on-board compression, and photovoltaic/battery power management for long-term in-situ operation.
Key findings
- The node supports up to 40 barometers, 10 microphones, and 5 differential pressure sensors; it streams data at 850 kbps over 438 m, with a maximum measured bandwidth of 1.2 Mbps at 200 m and reliable static-condition transfer up to 275 m at 938 kbps average.
- Active power consumption is about 140 mW, and with an 8.3% duty cycle it falls to about 10 mW; estimated lifetime exceeds 100 days (114 days for Aventa AV-7, 120 days for DTU 10 MW) and self-sustainability is reached with a 111 cm² photovoltaic panel under median solar conditions.
- Lossless pressure compression achieves a mean compression ratio of 2.12, with break-even compression ratio 1.28 and energy savings of 30.9% for small turbines and 46.1% for large turbines.
- For audio, FFT-HPF achieves a mean compression ratio of 4.024 versus 4.0 for ADPCM; FFT-HPF gives 43.9% energy savings on small turbines and 65.7% on large turbines, while ADPCM gives 49.0% and 67.1%, respectively. FFT-HPF was selected for the final version due to better time-domain and frequency-domain distortion performance.
Methods
- The paper presents the architecture, hardware design, firmware, power management, and two on-board compression algorithms for a flexible BLE sensor node intended for wind turbine blades.
- Field evaluation used a prototype with 10 microphones, 40 barometers, and 5 differential pressure sensors; wireless tests were performed in static conditions and on an Aventa AV-7 wind turbine, with power measured at distances from 25 m to 438 m.
- Lifetime and self-sustainability were estimated using measured power consumption, an 8.3% duty cycle, and solar irradiance data from Leconfield, UK (2014–2018), for an Aventa AV-7 turbine and a DTU 10 MW turbine.
Limitations
- The paper does not include a dedicated limitations section.
- Stated constraint: self-sustainability at the 95th-percentile worst winter solar condition is not achieved with the 111 cm² panel; the text says it can be reached with an increased photovoltaic panel size of at least 800 cm², while Table III lists “no (800 cm²)” for P95%.
- Stated constraint: lossless pressure compression is limited to a factor of about two due to the large dynamic range of pressure data, and in the worst case drops to 1.28.
- Evident from the text: field validation is limited to specific turbine platforms and test conditions, and audio compression is lossy, with distortion assessed via MAE, RMSE, MAPE, and peak-location mismatch rather than full signal fidelity.

Previous wireless solutions installed on wind turbines mainly included vibration measurements on the wind turbine tower for SHM monitoring purposes rather than acquiring aerodynamic data directly on the blade(s).
“However, previous designs mainly included vibration measurements [4], [17] on the wind turbine tower for SHM monitoring purposes rather than proposing a solution capable of acquiring aerodynamic data directly on the blade(s).”

The Introduction (p. 2) describes a wireless, MEMS-based system for vibration-based SHM, supporting that part of the citation. It specifies building modal analysis, however, and the In-Field Validation (p. 8) uses a laboratory structure simulating building behavior. The paper does not support the claim that measurements were made on a wind-turbine tower or the comparison with aerodynamic measurements on blades. (LLM, conf=0.87)

The Introduction describes the proposed wireless monitoring system as being within or on a turbine blade near its tip, not on the tower. It also says earlier studies used accelerometers to assess blade vibrations. The paper concerns vibration-based condition monitoring rather than aerodynamic-data acquisition, but it contradicts the claim about where this cited system measures vibrations. (LLM, conf=0.86)

When the distance between transmitter and receiver is not constant, an RTPC algorithm can significantly reduce power consumption by always keeping the TX power at the optimal point required for the current distance.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-23.
Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-23.
Cited sources are checked by gpt-6-sol.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
