Spin-Optical Metamaterial Route to Spin-Controlled Photonics

Shitrit, Nir, Yulevich, Igor, Maguid, Elhanan, Ozeri, Dror, Veksler, Dekel, Kleiner, Vladimir, Hasman, Erez·2013·Science

Abstract

Making Metamaterials: Controlling the propagation of electromagnetic waves is a key requirement in communication technologies. The components tend to be bulky, however, which can make it difficult to integrate with microelectronics circuits. Using arrays of metallic nanoantennae patterned on a substrate surface, Shitrit et al. (p. 724 ) fabricated a novel class of metamaterials: anisotropic materials without inversion symmetry. The materials may pave the way to polarization-dependent nanophotonics.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • The extraordinary transverse spin of evanescent waves is associated with the fundamental quantum spin-Hall effect of light.

“This is a manifestation of the extraordinary transverse spin of evanescent waves 53,54 associated with the fundamental quantum spin-Hall effect of light 55 .”

From Spin–orbit interactions of light (2015) · cites this paper as [55]

  • The transverse spin of an evanescent wave is independent of the polarization parameters and can be written in a universal vector form.

“Taking into account both electric- and magnetic-field contributions, it turns out that the transverse spin is independent of the polarization parameters and can be written in a universal vector form: 54,55”

From Spin–orbit interactions of light (2015) · cites this paper as [55]

  • The spin-direction locking in evanescent waves can be understood as the quantum spin-Hall effect of photons.

“Recently it has been argued that this phenomenon can be understood as the quantum spin-Hall effect of photons 55 .”

From Spin–orbit interactions of light (2015) · cites this paper as [55]

  • The quantum spin-Hall effect is characterized by the topological spin-Chern number (spin-weighted integral of the Berry curvature), which is non-zero for the free-space Maxwell equations.

“While the spin-Hall effect of light (Fig. 1) originates from the geometric phases and Berry curvature for light, the quantum spinHall effect is characterized by the topological spin-Chern number (spin-weighted integral of the Berry curvature), which is non-zero for the free-space Maxwell equations.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
