Abstract

The devastating gray mold pathogen Botrytis cinerea propagates via melanized conidia and sclerotia. This study reveals that the sclerotial germination of B. cinerea is differentially affected by different enzymes in the melanin synthesis pathway.

  • Compartmentalization of melanin biosynthetic intermediates serves to prevent autotoxicity, thereby ensuring normal sclerotial development.

“The compartmentalization of melanin biosynthetic intermediates serves to prevent autotoxicity, thereby ensuring normal sclerotial development [31].”

The Discussion describes compartmentalized melanin synthesis and proposes that scytalone is delivered outside the cell to avoid its toxic effects. The Results link scytalone accumulation to impaired sclerotial germination and sporulation, but do not establish that compartmentalization ensures normal sclerotial development more broadly. • Excessive accumulation of the intermediate scytalone is toxic to B. cinerea, inhibiting sclerotial and conidial germination.

  • Knocking out melanin synthesis genes leads to the accumulation of antimicrobial intermediate metabolites, which may impact fungal development.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
