Unusually Low Heat of Adsorption of CO2 on AlPO and SAPO Molecular Sieves
Open accessAbstract
The capture of CO2 from post-combustion streams or from other mixtures, such as natural gas, is an effective way of reducing CO2 emissions, which contribute to the greenhouse effect in the atmosphere. One of the developing technologies for this purpose is physisorption on selective solid adsorbents. The ideal adsorbents are selective towards CO2, have a large working adsorption capacity at atmospheric pressure and are easily regenerated, resulting in high working capacity. Therefore, adsorbents combining molecular sieving properties and low heats of adsorption of CO2 are of clear interest as they will provide high selectivities and regenerabilities in CO2 separation process. Here we report that some aluminophosphate (AlPO) and silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO) materials with LTA, CHA and AFI structures present lower heats of adsorption of CO2 (13 – 25 kJ/mol) than their structurally analogous zeolites at comparable framework charges. In some cases, their heats of adsorption are even lower than those of pure silica composition (20 – 25 kJ/mol). This could mean a great improvement in the regeneration process compared to the most frequently used zeolitic adsorbents for this application while maintaining most of their adsorption capacity, if materials with the right stability and pore size and topology are found.

In SAPOs, the Si distribution has an important effect on the catalytic and adsorptive behavior of the materials.
“In the case of SAPOs, the Si distribution can be controlled by modifying the synthesis conditions and also has an important effect on the catalytic and adsorptive behavior of the materials.”

The Methods section (Estimated Framework Negative Charge; page unavailable) says that isolated Si and Si-rich domains contribute differently to SAPO framework charge, which the paper uses to compare CO2 adsorption heats. This supports an effect of Si distribution on the adsorptive behavior studied. The paper does not itself establish an effect on catalytic behavior; that connection appears only in the title of a work listed in its References. (LLM, conf=0.82)

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
