Abstract

This research describes findings of sequencing and phylogenetic analyses of SARS-CoV-2 isolates from symptomatic patients cared for at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in November-December 2020 during a regional surge in cases and hospitalizations.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Epsilon, first identified in California in 2021, showed a 20% increase in transmission possibly attributed to L452R and D614G substitutions.

“The Epsilon (GH/452R.V1) variant first identified in California, the USA in 2021, showed a 20% increase in transmission possibly attributed to the L452R and D614G substitutions in the spike protein [36].”

The Results passage (page not specified) identifies a Southern California variant, CAL.20C, with an L452R spike substitution, but says it was first observed in July 2020, not 2021. The Discussion says its effect on infectivity remained uncertain; the paper does not report a 20% transmission increase or attribute one to L452R and D614G. (LLM, conf=0.90)

Self-check

Percentages, sums and reported differences re-computed from the paper’s own numbers.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
