Antioxidant activity of medicinal and aromatic plants. A review.

Miguel, M. G.·2010·Flavour and Fragrance Journal

Abstract

Abstract Antioxidant properties have been attributed to the essential oils but a great diversity of results has been reported, mainly attributed to the chemical composition of the essential oils and the diversity of tests used. In fact, several in vitro assays for the determination of antioxidant ability have been used. They can be divided into two main groups: those that evaluate lipid peroxidation and that those that measure free radical scavenging ability. In the present study, a brief description of the mechanism involved in the majority of techniques used for the evaluation of antioxidant activity of essential oils is given. At the same time, the antioxidant activities of some essential oils, measured through several methodologies, are presented and compared. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • The antioxidant ability of essential oils has been evaluated using several methods.

“The antioxidant ability of the essential oils has also been evaluated using several methods.”
  • Lipid oxidation can be generated via three pathways: non-enzymatic free radical-mediated chain reactions, non-enzymatic non-radical photo-oxidations, and enzymatic reactions.

“Lipid oxidation is a complex reaction that can be generated via three different pathways: 1. Non-enzymatic free radical-mediated chain reactions; 2. Non-enzymatic, non-radical photo-oxidations; 3. Enzymatic reactions [5].”
  • DPPH radical reacts with antioxidants mainly by fast electron transfer from the sample to DPPH radical; hydrogen abstraction from the sample is marginal because it occurs very slowly and depends on the hydrogen-bond accepting solvent.

“However, more recent studies have shown that what occurs is mainly a fast electron transfer from the sample to DPPH radical. The abstraction of hydrogen from the sample by DPPH radical is marginal, because it occurs very slowly and depends on the hydrogen-bond accepting solvent.”
  • Methanol and ethanol, solvents generally used for antioxidant ability assays, are strongly hydrogen bond-accepting, so the hydrogen-abstracting reaction with DPPH occurs very slowly.

“Methanol and ethanol, solvents generally used for antioxidant ability assays, are strongly hydrogen bond-accepting, therefore the hydrogen-abstracting reaction occurs very slowly [5].”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
