Abstract

The presence of BTEX in AFFF-impacted soils increased the yield of terminal transformation products from polyfluorinated surfactant 6:2 FtTAoS. Aromatic oxygenases are likely responsible for direct oxidation of the thioether moiety.

  • Recently, FtTAoS biodegradation and transformation to PFCAs were found to be enhanced by enriching AFFF-contaminated media with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and o-xylene (BTEX) compounds in landfill leachate.

“Recently, FtTAoS biodegradation and transformation to PFCAs were found to be enhanced by enriching AFFF- contaminated media with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and o-xylene (BTEX) compounds in landfill leachate (Olivares et al., 2022).”

From A review of microbial degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS): Biotransformation routes and enzymes (2023) · cites this paper as Olivares et al., 2022

The Abstract reports greater PFCA production with BTEX, but says BTEX-degrading microorganisms did not increase the rate of 6:2 FtTAoS removal. The methods passage describing the enrichment microcosms (lines 139–146) identifies AFFF-impacted surficial solids, not landfill leachate. Thus the increased PFCA yield is supported, but enhanced FtTAoS biodegradation and the landfill-leachate setting are not. (LLM, conf=0.90)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
