Abstract

The Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) and the Society of Thoracic Radiology (STR) have jointly produced this document. Experts in this subject have been selected from both organizations to examine subject-specific data and write this guideline in partnership. A formal literature review, weighing the strength of evidence has been performed. When available, information from studies on cost was considered. Computed tomography (CT) acquisition, CAC scoring methodologies and clinical outcomes are the primary basis for the recommendations in this guideline. This guideline is intended to assist healthcare providers in clinical decision making. The recommendations reflect a consensus after a thorough review of the best available current scientific evidence and practice patterns of experts in the field and are intended to improve patient care while acknowledging that situations arise where additional information may be needed to better inform patient care.

Claims the paper makes

This paper’s full text isn’t openly available, so its claims and self-check weren’t run. The registry and citation checks still apply.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • The calcium score can be measured on nearly every standard CT scan of the chest performed without contrast.

“While the calcium score has been traditionally measured on specialized electrocardiography (ECG)-gated cardiac CT, it can also be measured on nearly every standard CT scan of the chest performed without contrast8.”
  • A dedicated coronary calcium scoring CT is not yet covered by Medicare and most US insurance companies.

“Despite these recommendations, a dedicated coronary calcium scoring CT is not yet covered by Medicare and most US insurance companies, and for this reason, there is a great deal of interest in deriving the calcium score from routine chest CTs, which are far more common8,28,29.”
  • There is great interest in deriving the calcium score from routine chest CTs, which are far more common.

  • Coronary calcium scoring has been recommended by guidelines for risk stratification in primary prevention in asymptomatic individuals.

“Coronary calcium scoring has been recommended by the guidelines for risk stratification, specifically in the setting of primary prevention in asymptomatic individuals7,8.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
